Tanonga means ‘sweet water' in the local Aboriginal language, a simple testament to the value of this land's permanent springs and billabong. Owners Jill and Michael Coates see themselves as custodians and have spent years rehabilitating and replanting. The land has responded to their healing and rejuvenation is everywhere.With Eden being restored, Michael and Jill wanted to open their place to others who share their passion for nature. They have done so in characteristic style, creating an architecture that embraces and celebrates the area's innate beauty. There are just two lodges here, set far apart: one in a secret valley, the other atop a ridge with breathtaking views to the sea. Each location beguiles with its own mesmerising charm.
The structures use a passive solar design and are entirely solar powered. But there is no compromising luxury: soaring glass walls, natural stone, a wood fire and deep leather sofas make for a cosseting and inspirational environment. Walk the many trails, soak in the Japanese bath and meditate over the outlooks from every direction. You'll soon be in comfortable harmony with nature.
