You need a break from resorts and hotels … somewhere far from the madding crowd, perhaps on a gorgeous island, right on the beachfront, with aquamarine waters glinting from every window. Perhaps friendly dolphins might come cruising in – looking for some fish or to be admired – as a golden sun settles towards the horizon. Wake up, stretch your arms – this is just another day at the magnificent Tangalooma Beach Houses.

These privately held properties have been custom-built for holidaying families, with upstairs-downstairs living zones that are ideal for giving kids and grown-ups their space. It is this sense of space and clever design that impressed us most. There are bathrooms galore, generous bedrooms (plus sofa beds), a full kitchen, laundry and balconies that will magnetically draw you to drink in the view or watch the kids on the beach below.

And, yes, you are on an island in your own house but you are also near a resort, where you can swim in the pools, play tennis, hit the gym, sail, play squash or park the kids while you just ease back at the bar or restaurant. When you are ready for more serenity, pad back to your own private beachfront paradise.
