No wonder Captain Cook stopped near here in 1770: the fringe of tropical vegetation and sandy beaches of Agnes Water and Town of 1770 (hence the name) were as alluring then as now. This hidden pocket of Queensland's long coast is a gem that visitors seeking quiet and warmth find it hard to leave. Sunbird Gardens is our choice for a stay here.
Sunbird has three secluded villas set in a neatly trimmed bushland garden of palms. And, yes, you will hear sunbirds calling from the trees above. Couples travelling together love this place as an oasis away from the tourist towers. The villas are self-contained and very private but it is easy to gather for a stroll to the beach or over to the new surf club for a meal. We suggest tossing up a salad in the kitchen and throwing a few steaks on the barbecue outside as you sip a crisp white wine and watch the glow of the setting sun. Follow that with a soothing spa in your gazebo and life's good.
Owners Angie and Phil Draheim are a real asset to visitors. During our visit, Phil directed us to some hidden coves and beaches we would never have discovered on our own. The local area includes some wonderful national parks and tour options.
