Katherine should be high up on any serious Northern Territory eco-itinerary. The landscape is filled with hidden marvels: the spectacular Nitmiluk Katherine Gorge in the Nitmiluk National Park; the little-known Katherine River hot springs; the Cutta Cutta caves and Edith Falls. Better still, you can drive out to mostattractions in a standard car.
But where to base yourself? You need somewhere with a full kitchen, a comfortable lounge, and a choice of one or two bedrooms for either families or couples. A pool is essential to cool off at the end of each day. We found it all at St Andrews Serviced Apartments on our last visit – and it has only got better. The new BBQ area is a hit with guests who can relax there at day's end and share their travellers' tales.
The amenities are great but it's the staff who really shine here, with that friendly, very relaxed Territory style. They will word you up on the best tours and sights, ensuring you make the most of your Katherine time. Don't rush: allow a good three days for the complete experience.
