Rocky mountain highWe are huge fans of the Snowy View Cottage in all seasons. In winter, the distant snowy landscape makes the cosy wood-fired lounge a perfect spot to snuggle while your comfort food cooks. In warmer months, the exquisite garden – part of the Open Garden Scheme – draws you outside with its intoxicating blend of scents, colours and textures. It is hard to believe that all this is just five years old.
A fully integrated design ethic permeates the property, which was influenced by an American small-home design book that captured host Mary Shipway’s heart. The roomy two-bedroom cottage is built from locally found recycled materials that give it an organic feel of having been there for longer than its tender five years. The bedrooms are lusciously refined havens of comfort and simplicity with wonderful views from picture-window doors. A diverse range of artworks, antiques and curios draw the eye and interest to the corners and walls of these delightful rooms. Considerate attention to guests’ needs is evident everywhere, even including a milkshake maker for the kids.
Nearby is the mountain village of Dalgety for coffee, papers and pub meals. This is a very genuine Snowy hideaway that resonates the generosity and passion of its owner.
