Luxurious tropical sparkle

For a romantic tropical odyssey to Port Douglas, you want to be assured of superb facilities. Shantara Resort and Spa delivers on both counts. This sparkling resort is worth every one of its five stars. And, if you want to escape kids, you'll love Shantara even more; this is a retreat designed for adults.

The accommodation options include self-contained studio rooms with kitchenettes and one-bedroom apartments with a spacious lounge and full kitchen. You can combine one of each to create a two-bedroom haven, which would give two couples togetherness, but with privacy. Honeymooners should note that for the ultimate indulgence, you'll want to book in advance for one of just four Shantara Apartments that feature a private courtyard Jacuzzi. And thanks to a brilliant design, all the ground-floor studios and apartments feature pool decks so you can slide straight into one of the two resort pools. The interior style is supremely tasteful with shoji-style screen doors separating spaces and cool tiled floors. There is even a gym and day spa to keep the body pepped up and relaxed.

Shantara is perfectly placed for access to Four Mile Beach and Macrossan Street - both a 400-metre stroll - so a car is not required.
