Seaview Lodge was built in the 1860s and extended in the 1890s as a guesthouse for weary sailors. So how appropriate that it has been refitted for the service of welcoming guests from over the seas, including mainlander Australians and travellers from more distant shores.Seaview was a sailors' haven in the old days when Christmas Cove was the main port for Kangaroo Island and mariners would wander up the hill seeking lodgings. These days you arrive by ferry or plane and the facilities are now very contemporary with ensuite bathrooms for every room. But one thing has not changed: the hospitality that owner Barbara Ewens extends has a 100-year-old heritage.
Each guest room is freshly decorated in period style (we love the Rose Room with its four-poster bed and French doors opening to the garden). All guests get to savour the breakfast of local honey and yoghurt, fresh eggs, plus peaches and apricots from the garden when in season. Special note: do not miss Barbara's drunken prunes (the old sea salts would have loved these). And from this hilltop locale, expect marvellous views of the ocean and fresh sea breezes to start each day.
