Review by Beautiful Accommodation

The Royal Mail Hotel is one of Australia’s great culinary pilgrimages. Impressive local and worldwide accolades have been awarded to chef Dan Hunter for his exciting “nature-based” cuisine, plus it has one of the most impressive wine lists we have seen (the cellar houses more than 30,000 bottles). It helps to make Dunkeld in the Southern Grampians a must-visit for any food-loving traveller.

While the bistro menu is worth a detour to this historic pub, we recommend getting in early to book Hunter’s 10-course dining experience with matching wines – ask for a kitchen view table to fully experience chef’s masterful show.

The “pub” has been transformed into a contemporary, architectural beauty designed to frame the show-stopping views to Mount Sturgeon. Then there are the extensive native gardens (keep an eye out for kangaroos), the sexy swimming pool and equally impressive hotel rooms and apartments. For the best views, choose the Mountain View Rooms or, for a little more space, one of the apartments.

With such stunning natural surroundings, we suggest you explore using a self-guided walk – around the hotel and town, into the Grampians National Park or to the Mount Sturgeon working sheep station nearby. It’s the perfect way to whet your appetite for The Royal Mail’s gastronomic main event.

Have recommended the Royal Mail Hotel to many and given gift tokens to family members. This is a delightful place in a delightful part of Victoria. I cannot speak too highly; excellent accommodation and food - oh yes!

Have just visited the Royal Mail Hotel with my partner, what can I say, how about this. Having traveled the world and eaten in many great eateries, the Royal Mail Hotel is right up there with the worlds best. The food is sublime, the wine is divine, the service is exceptional and unobtrusive, the views wonderful. Truly this is one of the great food eateries in Australia and to me I rank it the Number One eatery in rural Victoria, no one else comes close to what Dan Hunter and his dedicated staff are doing in Dunkeld.
