Strahan is the jewel in the crown of Tasmania’s west coast. It’s an incredibly picturesque village on theshores of Macquarie Harbour that demands a stay of at least two to three days to enjoy it all.
There’s the harbour and Gordon River to explore by cruise, yacht, jetboat, seaplane or helicopter, the historic West Coast Wilderness Railway, plus the World Heritagelisted National Parks. It really is a haven for nature lovers.
To make the most of Strahan’s waterfront location, stay at the village’s only absolute waterfront accommodation. Risby Cove is a gorgeous spot, with cleverly designed buildings evoking the site’s unique history. The old Steamship Workshop is now a gallery, and the one- and two-bedroom spacious suites were built to reflect the nearby rainforest. They feature bespoke furniture made from Blackwood reclaimed from the mighty Franklin River. Naturally, all the suites have stunning Macquarie Harbour views and it is quite mesmerising to simply sit on your verandah and watch the sun set.
An added bonus is Risby Cove’s restaurant. Its walls of glass allow diners to take in the harbour view and this space is inviting at all times of the year. Local fish and seafood come particularly recommended – accompanied by a good Tassie wine list.
