Driving through the rustling cane fields and Mowbray Valley to Port Douglas Valley Retreat is the start of a colourful and atmospheric experience. The Retreat describes itself as a ‘Queenslander’ – with all the simplicity and relaxed charm that implies – but it is so much more. This traditional Queenslander has been ramped up into an utterly gorgeous, luxurious holiday retreat in the rainforest.It’s hard to believe it is just a 10-minute drive from Port Douglas as you walk into the dreamy grounds of the Retreat. The main house sits in graceful harmony with the surrounding lush sea of manicured garden, rainforest and a turquoise pool. Inside, the use of rare local timber produces a richly rustic feel. There are three big bedrooms and, our favourite, a ‘sleepout’ verandah with a romantic four-poster bed. The furnishings are immaculate, the kitchen is divine and we love the bathroom with soaking tub that overlooks the garden, and the private garden shower connected to the house by a decked walkway.
The Daintree and Port Douglas are easily reached for reef tours, shopping and splurges on the local seafood.
