Inland country heavenDubbo is the longed-for overnight stop on runs between Melbourne and Brisbane – drivers are exhausted and everyone is hungry. You have two options: stay on the noisy motel strip or head to the serenity of Pericoe Retreat. You won’t face this choice again once you have tried this immaculately presented five-star property (the only one with that rating in Dubbo).
Pericoe is the carefully nurtured project of Kem and Ross Irvine. They have made a place that will instantly appeal to tourists, families and business travellers. The rooms are lushly sumptuous with rich drapes, fine linens and spotless ensuites. We love how you can make a suite of two bedrooms with a private sitting room (complete with a wood fire and TV) for a family or small party. And even better is Kem’s food. She cooks up local beef, lamb, vegetables and fish for ravenous travellers – and you don’t need to order in advance, which hints at the superlative service she offers.
There is a pool to splash in after a hot day in the car, a tennis court and billiards room. Dubbo’s attractions including the zoo and the wonderful Japanese Garden, which was a gift from Minokamo city, are a short drive away.
