Nearly everyone arriving into Strahan stops to admire this historic 1899 mansion positioned enviably onStrahan’s Esplanade with views over Macquarie Harbour. Its gracious Federation lines, intriguing widow’s walk and observation tower combine to create a stately showstopper. We felt quite privileged turning into the garden driveway and being able to call Ormiston House our home for a few days.
It is a home that has been expertly restored to recreate the grandeur of yesteryear but with modern facilities. Think grand proportions, high ceilings, gas log fires, antique furniture and a lovely garden all within an easy stroll of everything in Strahan.There’s even a business centre plus an absorbing history gallery in the observation tower.
There are five bedrooms, all decorated in a nod to the era of Frederick Ormiston Henry – the founding father of Strahan who built the house. The F.O. Henry is suitably club-like in honour of the house’s founder, and the Christina is a pretty room reflecting Mrs Henry’s gentler character.
The ambience at Ormiston is that of a small boutique hotel. Your hosts are on-hand with fresh muffins on arrival, a potted history of the house and offer a tour and restaurant booking service. At night, the hotel’s Port o Call bar is open for pre-dinner drinks.
