Magnetic Island has evolved into sophisticated island stay for discerning travellers who want the pleasure and privacy of a secluded north Queensland scene. But kids and pets are welcome too, particularly when you stay at the stately Mandalay House.The very name Mandalay conjures a tropical aesthetic and romantic style. And this Mandalay has the complete Rudyard Kipling package of wooden floors, French doors opening to deep, shady verandahs and the soft, sweet aroma of tropical vegetation wafting in from the garden. There are four big bedrooms including a queen with ensuite and another that is its own pavilion off the verandah. The property is fully self-contained, which means that feeding the tribe doesn’t need to cost a fortune every time the hunger pangs call. Just throw some marinated chicken on the barbecue and sit back on the verandah with a gin and tonic tinkling in your hand.
Exotic birds call from the trees in the trim garden and your kids will soon be in the pool or off to nearby Nelly Bay beach to build a sandcastle. Magnetic Island is a World Heritage-listed national park and it makes a great base for trips to the outer barrier reef and Townsville.
