The drive to Janbal – past tropical fruit farms and acres of sugar cane – is a sublime experience. But arriving at the property, passing over the rushing stream and wandering through the butterfly-filled gardens that blend seamlessly with the surrounding rainforest, is pure magic. Janbal is named after the Blue Quandong fruit favoured by the Wompoo pigeon and is a registered nature refuge.This luxurious pole house has the feel of a tree house, with an open-plan design that harnesses the soft dappled rainforest light to gently illuminate the glorious interiors. Plantation-style rattan furniture and soft curtains moved by gentle breezes add to the ambience, and a distinctive collection of local art and antiques is testament to the passion with which Janbal is presented. With several balconies facing the pool and gardens, Janbal offers various spaces for quiet contemplation and wildlife spotting.
Secluded seaside swims can be enjoyed at Newell and Wonga, nearby cafes are great for casual dining and you can visit Diane Cilento’s Karnack Playhouse. The Daintree River, with crocodile spotting and cruises, is just 20 minutes away.
