Down to Erth
Coober Pedy
Review by Beautiful Accommodation
Coober Pedy is unique: a subterranean bush town of fortune hunters and underground dwellers that is easily reached by an all-tar road. This is the place where riches are made (and lost) digging for the elusive beauty of opals. The name Coober Pedy (‘kupa piti' in the local Aboriginal language) means ‘white man's hole in the ground', which aptly describes the many homes that have been carved from solid sandstone beneath the earth. That is Coober Pedy's magic… so any visit here must include a stay underground. We've looked at many dugout accommodations but Down to Erth is the pick of our list.
Like Coober Pedy, Down To Erth is one of a kind. It comprises just one solar-powered apartment, which is bright, fresh and capped with tall ceilings. There is a welcome plunge pool, BBQ and starry outdoor seating. But the real magic here is the hosts. They live separately but are on hand to give you the inside information on this incredible place: what to see and do, and where to dine (there are a number of options). You won't forget this experience but to make sure you actually have it – book well in advance.
