Wondrous Wonga BeachIf you don’t remember the simple pleasures of beach holidays in the 1950s – no traffic, fires on the beach in the evening, everyone in togs and barefoot around the house – here is your opportunity to recreate that lost lifestyle. Daintree Beach House is a funky, renovated tropical pad at Wonga Beach. It has four bedrooms (enough for a 1950s-size family) and a breezily laid-back style. From the shady pool deck you can look up from your book and gaze through the screen of coastal palms to the Coral Sea. Heaven!
The interior design is a totally unaffected blend of Australian beach house simplicity and Asian decorative features. Bright rainbow bedspreads, comfy lounges and marble benchtops in the well-equipped kitchen all help to imbue this gem with a relaxing atmosphere. The two bathrooms are stocked with fluffy towels and fine soaps. A cooling sea breeze shuffles languidly through the breezeways but if it gets warm, there are also fans and reverse-cycle air-conditioning.
All the suppliers you need for holiday feasting – a butcher, bottle shop, fruit and vege dealer – are nearby and Port Douglas is a short jaunt through rainforest and cane fields for tours, fine food and boutique shopping.
