Tarraleah is a genuinely unique getaway. Sitting in the highlands of central Tasmania, this village beganlife in the 1930s as a purpose-built Hydro Electric Commission township. The town “closed” in 1996, which provided an extraordinary opportunity to develop the hilltop area into a destination resort.
Today, Tarraleah has been renovated, reinvigorated and brought back to life. The 16 original cottages, which are house-sized rather than cosycottage-sized, have been beautifully restored to showcase their 1930s heritage. Choose from three- or four-bedroom houses (perfect for couples, families and friends travelling together) each featuring art deco furnishings and features (though the bathrooms and kitchens are refreshingly modern).
The village itself has extraordinary views, beautiful bushwalks to waterfalls and the hydro works, a golf course and even a herd of the cute Scottish highland cattle (kids will love hand-feeding them). It adds to the wildlife spotting, Wii and table tennis in the games room, squash courts, gym, cycling, fishing and 4WD or kayak tours. If that all sounds a little too fast for you, the indulgent day spa awaits.
There is also the licensed cafe and tavern, or you can take the extravagant option of having a chef come to your cottage to prepare dinner for you.
