It is incredible to enter this historic Colonial building and imagine it as the once-bustling flour mill it was in the 1850s. A sympathetic restoration has ensured this great heritage has been retained, with its thick stone walls, pit-sawn beams, six-storey chimney and slate roof, but it has also incorporated modern comforts.The emphasis here is on letting guests unwind and indulge, complete with home-cooked afternoon teas or suppers and gourmet breakfasts. You will sample homemade jams made from organic fruit grown on the property, which also produces many of the fresh fragrant flowers thoughtfully placed in each room. Turkish rugs, quality linen and bedspreads, and a range of amazing antiques and “objet d’art” continue this atmosphere of heritage charm.
Right near Deloraine in the pretty Meander Valley, the rugged Great Western Tiers Range forms the backdrop here. It makes a great base to explore the wonders of northern Tasmania and its World Heritage wilderness including Cradle Mountain. The helpful hosts, who are responsible for the reincarnation of this property, may even show you Bowerbank Mill’s secrets.
