You may think you have died and gone to French heaven when you arrive here. Black Springs Bakery is a charmingly historic and stylishly rustic Provencal-style private retreat just for two, yet a lot closer than Provence.
Just outside the thriving gourmet centre of Beechworth, this pied-àterre is set within a rambling garden of over 10 acres and features lots of outdoor “rooms” to discover.
There is the fragrant rose walk, the orchard laden with plums, apples and pomegranates, rock walls and gravel paths to follow, plus a parterre garden and rolling lawns with a backdrop of towering gums.
All this plus a symphony of birdlife, crickets and cicadas that could only be Australian, although the confusion of pintades (guinea fowls) lends a certain je ne sais quoi to the setting.
Step inside the historic old bakery and you will be enthralled by its chic simplicity and French good looks. Think muted tones, comfortable furniture and a gorgeous pot-belly wood fire offset by rough hewn stone walls, plus everything you need for a short or long stay.
The room downstairs includes a kitchen, dining and living area, while the upstairs bedroom with its French-styled ensuite is pure Gallic charm personified. As the French would say: C’est magnifique!
