Harmonious bushland havenIt’s too easy to rave about the seductive qualities of Billabong Moon. This Hunter Valley property strikes a wonderfully resonant tone for every note of presentation, design, privacy and service. Think of contemporary Australian architecture styles infused with a Japanese sensibility for uncluttered interiors here. A Zen-like trance of peace and tranquillity descends like a veiled curtain after you have dropped the bags, settled in with a Pokolbin red, and begun to hear the wind and the birdsong.
There are five cottages and two guest rooms on this 25-acre estate, not that you would know it. Each cottage is carefully screened away in its own private communion with the surrounding landscape. For example, Billabong sits like a Kyoto temple before a sublime lake and Treetops is at bird height, featuring an amazing outdoor claw-foot bath. The standard of service and appointments is first-class with four-poster beds, Australian antiques and hearty breakfast hampers to cook in your kitchen.
The Pokolbin area is synonymous with superb shiraz and semillon wine, with many cellar doors to visit. But we also recommend indulging in the treats at Billabong Moon such as its famous red wine bath or the celebrated gourmet barbecue packs.
