Perth: a world of its own with luxury accommodation to match

As the world’s most isolated capital city - Adelaide is nearly 3,000 kilometres away - Perth has developed a very distinctive vibe: gung-ho about progress but laid-back about lifestyle. You'll notice this quickly when selecting your Perth accommodation, just as you will on your exploration of the vibrant capital city.

Mining money has fuelled a local appetite for the very best in wine, food and pleasure-seeking. The hardest choice for visitors is what to do, see, eat or drink next. For the picture postcard view of Perth’s skyscrapers reflecting in the Swan River, we suggest starting with a trip to South Perth. Lap up the scenery as you sip a Margaret River sauvignon blanc over a fresh marinara pasta.

Perth’s elite like to shop and party at the old working class suburb of Subiaco. It was settled in 1851 by Benedictine monks from Subiaco in Italy and has retained its village feel. But the shopping, dining and entertainments have long since left its former working class roots behind.

Cottesloe, a short drive southwest your Perth CBD accommodation, is the only localbeach many people know –and with good reason. You can picnic beneath majestic Norfolk Pines and feel powdery white sand between your toes before stepping into the crystal-clear waters. There is enough swell for body surfing and the nearby reefs are ideal for snorkelling. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are sensational when taken with a glass of Cape Mentelle viognier.

Fremantle guards the mouth of the Swan River and the old port has a fine collection of 19th-century streetscapes and convict era colonial buildings. Galleries, cafes and restaurants line the heritage streets. We suggest venturing from your nearby accommodation in Perth to wander Fremantle's small lanes at random to see what you can find.

Nearby Rockingham is a real holiday town but without the long drives that the denizens of Melbourne and Sydney are used to making for their beach holidays. It’s just a 40-minute drive from the city to this aquatic playground, where you can snorkel, surf, sail and swim with dolphins.  Rockingham is a place to relax, unwind and spend a few days exploring the shops, restaurants and bars - and don’t miss the cute little fairy penguins.

Perth is the obvious base for an exploration of Western Australia. It is the hub of a transport net covering the remotest regions and is an absorbing destination in its own right. We suggest starting or ending any Western Australia odyssey with our handpicked Perth accommodation.
