To really discover Australian Aboriginal culture, we have chosen two unique tours, which are operated by a small-group touring specialist – Aussie Adventure Holidays.
The first takes you into the heart of Kakadu to the Aboriginal lands of Hawk Dreaming. Special permission is granted exclusively to this tour to enter this sacred area. Accommodation is in comfortable permanent safari tents and only guests on this tour can visit the camp, heightening the magic. The expedition includes visits to rock art, waterfalls and wetland cruises in this new and exclusive Kakadu location.
The other tour takes you to Bathurst Island, north of Darwin, to visit the Tiwi people – coastal Aborigines with a culture quite different to their mainland counterparts. You fly to Bathurst Island and over two days learn about the Tiwi people's Dreamtime, arts and crafts from local women, and discover the complex rituals associated with the pukamani burial poles and bush tucker. Wildlife encounters, including spotting turtle nests, are also a highlight of this fully guided tour. This tour makes an ideal combination with a Hawk Dreaming encounter (both leave from Darwin).
Location: Tours depart Darwin May to October. Facilities: Each tour includes accommodation (safari tents at Hawk Dreaming; camping on Tiwi Island tour), most meals, transportation on tour (AC) and expert guides. Visit this property's website
