Discover the charm of Northwest Tasmania with our luxury accommodation

The Spirit of Tasmania ferries people into Devonport from the mainland but the charms of the state’s northwest really kick in beyond the city’s boundaries.

Perhaps visit the wealth of rare indigenous rock engravings at the Aboriginal culture centre Tiagarra, or historical Home Hill, the former residence of Tasmania’s only prime minister of Australia Joe Lyons, before escaping town. To the East, Latrobe is known as Tasmania’s platypus capital; grab a guide and you might spot them. West of Devonport expect coastal wetlands and temperate rainforest peppered between a string of rural fishing communities and seaside resorts. The sleepy village of Penguin is lauded for its fantastic beaches, and the old timber-milling centre of Wynyard sighs in the shelter of Table Cape.

Cradle Mountain village is the northern entrance to the superb Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and justifiably popular the world over with bushwalking enthusiasts. It includes Mount Ossa, Tasmania’s highest peak and Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest natural freshwater lake. Mountain rivers cascade through age-old rainforest and alpine moorland, jagged mountain peaks rise from rugged plains and all is reflected in icy-blue lakes that puncture the park.

Pick up bushwalking maps from one of the visitor information centres and choose from dozens of short walks or come prepared to tackle the epic Overland Track for breathtaking scenery that flourishes with wildlife. There is a track to suit every level of ability in this natural paradise.

Spectacular mountain valley roads carry visitors to the must-see heritage village of Strahan on the West coast. This busy tourist hub is sheltered from the Southern Ocean by beautiful Macquarie Harbour, whose serene waters are a launchpad for cruises, seaplanes and helicopters into the expansive Western Wilderness. In the middle of the harbour, Sarah Island was once one of Australia’s most hellish convict outposts and makes an enthralling trip.

Reach the nearby colonial township of Queenstown aboard the old-world West Coast Wilderness. At the edge of the forest, the 1920s township of Tarraleah – once home to hundreds of hydro-electric workers – has been restored as a wilderness resort, providing a wonderful insight into the history of the area.
