Port Stephens is larger than Sydney Harbour and resplendently beautiful. Its huge bay runs inland for more than 20kms and is speckled with luxury accommodation. Nelson Bay is the local ‘capital’ – if an unpretentious little town of 8000 can take that title – and a favourite spot for holidaying families, scuba divers, fishing fanatics and whale watchers. The Fly Point marine reserve is much loved by snorkellers and divers, and you can hand-feed the remarkable eastern blue gropers there.
Hawks Nest, across from Nelson Bay, is a quiet village (and sometime holiday haven of former Prime Minister John Howard). The area has prolific wildlife including a rare coastal dingo population. The view to Jimmy’s Beach from the Yacaba headland is breathtaking. The Forster/Tuncurry inlet north of Hawks Nest is a busy holiday town in season with fantastic family-friendly beaches and superb fishing. The climb up the Cape Hawke in Booti Booti National Park will test your legs but the outlook is phenomenal.
Port Macquarie’s beaches are picture postcard pretty and will keep you splashing with pleasure, whether you like paddling in the shallows, riding the waves, or simply taking them in from the balcony view of your North Coast accommodation. Take a camel safari over the sands at Lighthouse Beach. The Camden Haven Music Festival in May is an eclectic and superbly run regional music treat.
The Trial Bay Gaol at Arakoon was an internment camp for German prisoners during World War I. Now you can explore the State Conservation Area there before toddling into South West Rocks for coffee and the morning papers.
One of Australia’s best dive spots is just offshore – the 125-metre long Fish Rock Cave. Up the road is the laid-back fishing village of Macksville and nearby Taylors Arm is famously the source of Slim Dusty’s 1957 hit, A Pub With No Beer. Nambucca Heads is another fantastic holiday town with patrolled beaches and unusual local exhibits such as the Frank Partridge VC Military Museum.
Coffs Harbour has the Big Banana and it is the big town of the north coast. It has all the attractions that fun-hunting kids, shopaholics and party hounds need to stay entertained. In September, the city hosts the International Buskers and Comedy Festival.
