Bondi and Manly are the two beaches that most non-Sydneysiders know by name. But those in the know just love Coogee, with its foaming surf and the best range of sea baths in the great beach city. The very aptly named Dive Hotel in Coogee makes a perfect base for the most relaxed beach holiday available in Sydney or, indeed, as a conveniently secluded base for exploring the city.
Dive is no certainly no dive (in the flophouse sense). Its air-conditioned suites are stylish right down to the little blue tiles in the ensuites with their stainless steel fittings. Our favourite room at the front has a spectacular view to the ocean, but whichever you choose you are in a dress-circle location. Coogee is renowned for its broad range of great restaurants from seafood to Middle Eastern, Italian and half a dozen other cuisines.
Everything is provided at Dive from continental breakfasts to beach towels (do yourself  a favour and use them at the enchanting Wylie's Baths). The nearby Annex duplex is ideal for families who need more space. Whether you stay at Dive or their Annex, this is the place for a funky, beachy Sydney break away from the tourist buses at the brand-name beaches.
