Australia's astonishingly rich and intriguing multi-cultural history is on spectacular display at the Tizzana Winery Bed and Breakfast. It was originally the estate of a young Florentine surgeon, Thomas Fiaschi, who migrated to Australia at 22 in the early 1870s. He planted vines here in the 1880s and it is still one of only two vineyards in Australia to produce the sublime Aleatico varietal.
Tizzana's two guest suites shimmer with the estate's exotic Italian origins. The Provincial suite is billed as a perfect first-night room for honeymooners (or those recapturing the moment) and with its gorgeous sleigh bed, it could indeed come straight from the romance-soaked pages of di Lampedusa's The Leopard. The Rose room has a magnificent Tuscan ambience, with French windows that open to a timbered private verandah. And the guest lounge – once the winery processing room – is filled with local art and historic curios.
 But a real highlight here is the optional five-course dinner with matched Tizzana wines (including the delectable Aleatico). Breakfast is merely splendid and can be taken on the privacy of your verandah. It all makes for a perfect gourmet getaway for a couple – or two.
