Like the ancient eclectic philosophers, who belonged to no school of thought but drew on many sources for inspiration, Carol Ladd has achieved a marvellously creative synthesis with The Farmhouse at Urimbirra. This self-contained cottage is strikingly decorated with Aboriginal art and artefacts as well as Indian and Spanish collectables from America.
The house is built in local granite, with clever use of recycled materials and a judicious sprinkling of local crafts. Downstairs is a large open-plan living and dining area with splendid views of the rural landscape, plus a country kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the generous master offering vistas of the ocean and a very cute verandah. From the second bedroom balcony you can see Mount Dromedary.
Seclusion is a hallmark for couples to enjoy a romantic getaway, but families can take
in the area's many attractions. There are superb beaches and golf courses nearby, day trips to Montague Island, and whale and dolphin watching in season. Beach and deep-sea fishing, bushwalking, riding and surfing round out a varied choice of activities, and the region is blessed with many art galleries. Location: 460km or five hours south of Sydney; 265km or 3½ hours southeast of Canberra. RA 35 J4.
Facilities: Farmhouse with two attic bedrooms (queen), large open-plan lounge/dining, kitchen, bathrooms. BBQ. Full breakfast provisions. Visit this property's website
