It's hard to appreciate unless you have been here – a sea of ancient burrawang palms (cycads) towered over by blackbutt eucalypts. The palms are mature and it's unusual to see so many of them in one place. The result is total privacy – except for the rosellas, king parrots, bower birds, kangaroos, wallabies and endangered yellow-bellied gliders that frequent the area. This tranquil scene has been thousands of years in the making, creating a truly rare and precious ecosystem.
The ultra-modern cabins, which are spread well apart, are classed as private spa, premium spa and double-bedroom spa (perfect for two couples travelling together) and all have cathedral-like glass walls to drink in the views. Appointments include a king bed, fully equipped kitchen, your own deck and barbecue, and a cosy log heater.
This retreat is surrounded by bushland, next to a nature reserve and close to freshwater
and tidal wetlands. It is handy to amazing beaches, sub-tropical rainforests, the Mogo Zoo and national park wilderness areas. In short, it is a superb base for bushwalking, bird watching, sea kayaking, horseback riding, exploring craft shops and art galleries – or just marvelling at the setting. Location: 298km or four hours south of Sydney. RA 35 G4.
Facilities: One- and two-bedroom ‘Bowers', each with king bedroom, kitchen, lounge (fire, TV, DVD/CD), bathroom (double spa), deck (BBQ), laundry, broadband. Full breakfast provisions (first morning). Visit this property's website
