Visitors often liken Australia's inner-city terraces, with their wrought-iron clad verandahs, to those of the French quarter of New Orleans. And that delightful melange is also on display at Roan Horse Inn in coastal Pambula. The building is English colonial in form but readily accepts slender verandah posts and neat window shutters that could easily have been French.
Brian and Sharon have taken up the French provincial theme and artistically applied it to this delightful National Trust classified building, which dates from 1845. Lovers will quickly find their way to the French Room, which has a gorgeous cartouche (scrolled) bedhead and matching armoire, ensuite with spa and private dining room with fireplace and balcony. La Madeleine has a wrought-iron bed and a magnificent antique Venetian chandelier, and the ensuite in Malmaison has a beautiful claw-foot bath and a French antique double basin.
The hosts are keen collectors of antiques and artwork, much of which adorns Roan Horse Inn. But this is not a stuffy Victorian interior – furniture and fabrics have been chosen to bring out what they call “la touche Francaise”. Parfait! Location: 460km or 6˝ hours south of Sydney; 265km or 3˝ southeast of Canberra. RA 34 J5.
Facilities: Three double rooms, each with ensuite (one with spa and private dining room). Lounge/dining (fireplace). Gardens with pavilion. Full breakfast served.
