There is nothing, absolutely nothing, standard about this understated and overwhelmingly beautiful retreat. Meadowlake's rooms are filled with artworks and ceramics (some are for sale in the gallery foyer), perfectly complementing the tasteful and inviting decor. Guest rooms are sumptuously yet subtly decorated in muted tones and artwork adorns each room. And this place really is for everyone; you can even fly in by helicopter, but arriving by car and passing manicured gardens replete with sculpture is impressive enough.
However you arrive, there is plenty to entertain. Borrow golf clubs and try the seven-hole ‘chipping' course, the nine-hole links at Mollymook, or the 18-hole championship course at Hilltop. Birdwatchers are sure of plenty to see, and shoppers will love antique hunting in the 19th century village of Milton.
Breakfast at Meadowlake is a treat worth waking for – try omelettes with herbs from the garden and preserves made with the Lodge's own fruit. Afternoon tea can be served in your room. And for dinner, Hors d'oeuvres on the patio, then hermit crab tails and perhaps a steak, followed by mango ice cream with poached fruit. Let's give the helicopter a rest for at least a few days. Location: 215km or three hours south of Sydney. RA 35 D5.
Facilities: Three ensuite guest rooms, guest lounge and dining. RC AC. Dinner by prior arrangement; full breakfast served.
