When you see the turn-off to Tilba Tilba on the Princes Highway, do not hesitate. Drive away from the garish billboards and ugly excuses for buildings that blemish parts of our beautiful coastline and wind your way into the charming 1870s village of Tilba Tilba. From the south, you will see an enchanting two-storey house with wide verandahs overlooking beautiful gardens. This is Green Gables.
Owners Stuart Absalom and Philip Mawer have made Green Gables into a gorgeously comfortable country retreat. Generous breakfasts are served on the verandah and evening banquets, using locally grown vegies, are served in the lovely dining room. In the morning, mosey around the galleries and craft shops of Tilba Tilba and her 1890s neighbour, Central Tilba.
Both villages are classified by the National Trust so there is no danger of high-rise
horror here. The area is a magnet for artists and musicians who are attracted by the unspoilt beauty of the villages and surrounding national parks and state forests. Take an even bigger step back in time and visit the dramatic-looking Gulaga (aka Mt Dromedary) with local Aboriginal people for whom the mountain is sacred. Location: 360km or five hours south of Sydney. RA 35 J4.
Facilities: Three queen bedrooms (two with ensuite, one with private bathroom). Guest lounge, wide verandahs, private dining room. Dinner by prior arrangement; full breakfast served.
