In past decades, Australia's fragile Alpine ecosystems have been damaged by cattle herds, water loss and unsustainable land use. But such misuse of this special landscape is steadily being undone, thanks to properties like Alpine Habitats. If you want to support the change to sustainable living in a real way – and have a rewarding and comfortable Alpine stay – start here.
The 18 Habitats are exceptional in their use of energy-efficient, self-sustaining technologies to help eliminate their carbon footprint and ecological impact. There's even an ethanol fuelled fireplace. But don't get the wrong impression here: these are very definitely about luxurious comfort, pleasure and convenient access to the ski fields. Proving that green does not have to mean uncomfortable, there is underfloor heating and gadgets like the LCD TV (if you can tear yourself away from the spectacular views).
Alpine Habitats is an attractive option year-round. In winter, you can whip up to Thredbo or Perisher; in summer, you have one of Australia's most precious landscapes to explore. Location: 495km or 6½ hours southwest of Sydney; 210km or three hours south of Canberra, between Jindabyne and Thredbo, near the Skitube. RA 34 H2.
Facilities: 18 Habitats, each with two bedrooms (king or twin singles), lounge/dining (LCD TV, DVD/CD, Ecosmart ethanol fireplace), kitchen, bathroom, balcony (BBQ). Floor heating. Self-catering.
