If your next exploration is out to see what lies beyond the back of Bourke, you will need a pit stop to rest and refuel. Problem is that once you have unpacked at the Bourke Riverside and taken tea in its sensational – and multi-award winning gardens – you may not want to leave this last outpost of civilisation. This memorable outback stay is right on the banks of the Darling River and started life 133 years ago as the Telegraph Hotel.
The Riverside calls itself a motel – and there are 14 ensuite rooms, a pool, restaurant and business centre to prove it – but it is really more like a boutique hotel with a history that goes back to the days when paddle steamers plied the Darling (the old wharf is just down the road). Riverside can't help itself from being grand, with its four-metre high ceilings, king beds in every room, writing desks and antique bathroom fixtures. Here you get a sense of what it was like when the Back o' Bourke really was beyond the comprehension of city folk.

You can eat in or wander down to the town clubs and restaurants for a meal. But allow plenty of time to explore this superbly restored relic of the old colonial west.
Location: 780km or 10 hours northwest of Sydney. RA 31 E10.
Facilities: 14 ensuite rooms (king bed, AC, TV, VCR, minibar). Pool, tennis court, business centre, guest laundry, dining room/restaurant. Continental or full breakfast available.
