The cottages at Manzanilla Ridge rise above their bush-enshrouded upland like beacons of civilised comfort. Here you can lie back in the deck spa and gaze at the firmament of stars above, cradling a glass of crisp white wine or a hearty red from the selection in your cottage. And you don't need to worry about seeing other guests – Manzanilla's four cottages are discreetly set in hushed privacy.
Inside the modern timber cottages nothing has been forgotten. The full gourmet kitchen even includes its own breadmaker and an espresso machine for coffee aficionados. Upstairs, there is a romantic loft; downstairs, there is room for family or friends to gather around the wood-burning heater.
Manzanilla is perfect winter or summer. Days start with a full hamper of breakfast provisions. Then you can spend some lazy hours deckside, watching the passing parade
of wombats and kangaroos from the spa. Or you might tour the local boutique Lovedale winemaking area of the Hunter Valley, stopping in at family-owned wineries for tastings. The hosts can arrange transfers for guests who fly in to Newcastle. Location: 200km or 2½ hours north of Sydney. RA 23 B3.
