The charming town of Morpeth had its beginnings in 1821 as a Hunter River port shipping farm produce to Newcastle. One intriguing piece of local info is that Stephen Arnott – sixth generation of the Arnott's Biscuits family – operates a historic bakery in the National Trust precinct.
The 1860 Bronte Guesthouse also graces the heritage area. Built for one of the founders of the Soul Pattinson pharmaceutical business, Bronte has been meticulously restored by hosts Nicolena and Martin. It has high ceilings and generous rooms typical of the mid-colonial era, but contemporary comfort has not been forgotten. The Hunter Suite is especially elegant, with French windows opening to a balcony and river vistas. A Mercedes stretch limo can be yours by arrangement for transfers or tours of nearby Hunter wineries.
Morpeth has first-rate cafes and restaurants, and it hosts several festivals during the year. Bronte, a sister property to The Old George and Dragon, maintains the standard with gourmet full breakfasts – yoghurt, dried berries, figs, sourdough bread and cooked selections are part of the perfect wake-up call. Location: 170km or two hours north of Sydney. RA 23 A5.
Facilities: Six ensuite rooms (flat screen LCD, DVD, CD, RC AC. Wireless broadband). Evening turndown service. Guest lounge (open fire), breakfast room. Full breakfast served.
