Bishops of Bendigo evidently lack the privileges they once commanded, based on the glorious Heatherton estate in Blackheath, high in the Blue Mountains. Heatherton was built as a summer residence for Bendigo's prelates in the late 1890s (and what romantics they must have been).
This very unhumble ‘cottage' – there are five sumptuous bedrooms and the place can happily accommodate 10 guests – has a charmingly feminine fragrance from the winding pathways of the garden to the creamy French provincial colourings of its rooms. The ecclesiastical origins of Heatherton are seen in the triple arched French window in the lounge room, which opens out onto one of the district's finest gardens. Walking these grounds is a spiritual meditation in itself. We really love Heatherton's adorable light and spaciousness – the many rooms and sun nooks are flooded with brilliant warmth.
The huge kitchen (with Aga oven) is fit to provide a feast for the hungriest clerics and their paramours. But we are not sure that many a priestly body ever soaked in the claw-foot bath that now gives glorious views through a picture window. A hidden blessing. Location: 112km or 1¾ hours west of Sydney. RA 24 D4.
