Discover the delights of this region from your Hunter Valley accommodation

Aside from the stunning Hunter Valley boutique and luxury accommodation, the ambrosial delights of wine are the focus of many visitors’ trips to the Hunter Valley and with good reason. Its soil and climate produce some of the world’s finest dry white wines, notably including wonderful semillons that only improve with age. This variety was introduced into the region in the 1820s and has thrived here like nowhere else. Other notable Hunter varieties include chardonnays, verdelhos and delicious shiraz.

With more than 120 wineries to explore, your cellar-door hopping and tasting will only scratch the surface in a few days. In the Pokolbin area, Tyrrell’s produces its premium shiraz and semillons, which are regular trophy winners at Australian wine shows. But as you cruise the back-country roads from Pokolbin through Rothbury towards Branxton, expect to stumble across boutique wineries. Be sure to stop in and collect a case or two. Look in on Rothbury Estate; it was founded in 1968 by the late wine aficionado Len Evans, triggering the modern Australian wine renaissance.

Over the past 15 years, Lovedale has become famous on the global foodie trail for its annual Long Lunch in late May. This involves a weekend of progressive wine and food tastings at seven local wineries including Wandin Valley Estate and Allandale Winery. Music and other artistic pursuits add to the local flavour. Indeed, the Hunter has made a real signature style of combining gourmet events with the arts, and what better way to explore it all than from luxury and boutique accommodation? Jazz in the Vines and the Hunter Valley Harvest Festival regularly draw thousands of repeat visitors for fun, fine food and good wine. Can it get more enticing than that?

The Hunter offers much more than fabulous reds and dry whites. It also has the Barrington Tops, one of Australia’s most distinctive and unusual high country plateaus. This 1200 square kilometre landscape of extinct volcano cones, subtropical rainforests and ancient stands of Antarctic beech is a unique microclimate.

Two of the best vantage points in this eerie, evocative area are Devil’s Hole and Thunderbolt’s Lookout, which recall the lawless bushranging of the mid-1800s. Many visitors to the Hunter who are after a real retreat from urban life book themselves into the cottages and cosy B&Bs in the uplands. They make ideal bases to venture down to the wineries and historic country towns below. Almost any road you take in the area will lead to some historic or enthralling spot in an unexpected or out-of-the-way place.
