Discover historical Hobart from your luxury accommodation

Rolling farmlands, blankets of forest and an undulating, windswept coastline peppered with creative communities, fishing villages and heritage towns are the heart and soul of Tasmania’s south.

The area’s harsh convict past is remembered in many of the region’s National Trust-preserved historic places of interest – of which there are 90 in Hobart alone – but the region celebrates its present too. Hobart is a beautiful harbour city, with a compact centre of old sandstone buildings and contemporary architecture that will have you itching to explore on foot. The highlight for many visitors is the vibrant historic arts and food precinct around Salamanca Place and Battery Point, with hip cafes, boutique shops and dockside restaurants where you can enjoy some of the region’s freshest seafood, all within stride of your Hobart accommodation.

Just 25km from Hobart, stop at the heritage village of Richmond to see elegant Georgian architecture and visit the ghostly Richmond Gaol (Australia’s oldest). The banks of picturesque Coal River make a good spot for a picnic or perhaps wander the streets, stopping in at the cafes and galleries. Further inland, Tasmania’s Heritage Highway flows through other pretty villages including Bagdad, Kempton, Pontville and Bothwell, right up to Launceston (see page 184). For wine buffs, the Coal River Valley and Derwent Valley offer scenic routes with cellar doors.

South of Hobart the Huon Trail offers more splendid coastal panoramas against a backdrop of World Heritage wilderness mountains. First mapped on a French expedition in the late 1700s under Rear Admiral Bruni D’Entrecasteaux, rocky shores, sandy beaches and dazzling inlets make the D’Entrecasteaux Channel a dramatic slice of Southern Tasmania.

Quiet country roads carve through idyllic farmlands and rolling hills in the Huon Valley, studded with apple orchards and vineyards. On its eastern slopes sits riverside Cygnet, a popular rural enclave home to an eclectic mix of arty types and farmers. Woodbridge on Peppermint Bay is a place to stop for lunch with a view across to Bruny, while the old timber town of Geeveston is the gateway to the dizzying Tahune Forest AirWalk over the tree canopy.
