Luxury, Romantic & Boutique Accommodation on Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road accommodation is beautiful and varied. Victoria’s pin-up tourist destination is justifiably popular for its kilometres of sandy beaches, azure bays and jaw-dropping geological formations. It includes the aptly named Surf Coast – swollen in summer by a tidal wave of holidaymakers and surfers, and moody and deserted in winter. Strap yourself in for a roller-coaster ride on one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives, flanked by the bush-clad Otway Ranges on one side and rugged wave-pounded headlands on the other.

A luxury escape on the spectacular Great Ocean Road is a must!

It’s hard to believe that a road completed as a job-sustenance project during the Great Depression could become such a hive of chic beachside retreats, historic B&Bs and luxury holiday pads.

But this gorgeous coastline, studded with vibrant seaside resorts and stunning accommodation, scenic clifftop vistas and watersports for summer revellers, has made the Great Ocean Road a perennial favourite with holidaying Victorians. The road first kisses the coast at Torquay, long revered by dedicated surfers who come to experience the surf Mecca Bells Beach, and now blessed with good cafes and restaurants. Further west, Lorne’s long sandy beach has helped give the resort a reputation as a family holiday destination, although it also draws hordes of young people in summer, attracted by its funky cafes, pubs, shops and entertainment. More intimate getaway spots may be found at Fairhaven, Wye River, Sugarloaf and Kennett River, where koalas are regularly spied among the eucalypts.

Apollo Bay, once a sleepy fishing village accessible only by sea, is now a smart seaside resort famed for its seafood, nestled in the foothills of the majestic Otway Ranges. From here the road rises into the hills of Cape Otway, home to Australia’s oldest lighthouse. Beyond the cape, sandstone cliffs and ocean-eroded islets make the Shipwreck Coast a breathtakingly photogenic stretch. The windswept and majestic Twelve Apostles, along with Loch Ard Gorge and Mutton Bird Island, are all worth taking the time to explore.

As the crow flies, the Great Ocean Road looks deceptively like a far shorter tour than it actually is; that narrow, winding coastal road takes time. A more direct route to the western reaches of the region is the Princes Highway via Winchelsea and Colac, but it is by no means the scenic short-straw. Extinct volcanoes, crater lakes and verdant pastoral lands provide a dramatic outlook for the inland journey.

Historic Colac is an alternative base for exploring the lush Great Otway National Park, with its sparkling fresh waterfalls, giant ferns and towering rainforest trees. Spot native wildlife such as glow worms at Melba Gully or the elusive platypus at Lake Elizabeth. Visitors can also take to the water in a canoe and paddle around the lakes, rivers and estuaries or strike out into the azure ocean on a kayak.

From romantic getaways to surf holidays, discover a perfect pad for any escape in our handpicked Great Ocean Road accommodation. For a stay further afield check out accommodation in Victoria before you check in.
