Discover the Hinterland charm from your luxury Gold Coast accommodation

The Gold Coast easily lays claim to being the Fun Central of Queensland due to its many tourist magnets. And why not? All the big theme parks that your kids – and maybe you – have been dreaming about for years are here: Dreamworld, Wet ‘n’ Wild, Sea World, Movie World, Australian Outback Spectacular and many smaller ones too.

You can also pick your choice of beaches, which seem to roll on forever with soft golden sands lapped by warm, inviting waters. If you need sun, fun, sand and neon lights, the Gold Coast will keep you busy. But there is another side to the Gold Coast that is equally compelling in its own exquisitely natural way: the rainforested mountains that begin just a 30-minute drive from the crush on the coast. Up in the Gold Coast hinterland where the air is clear, there are more than 100,000 hectares of national parks and eco-reserves, spliced by walking tracks and studded with an array of waterfalls, galleries, boutique accommodation, day spas, vineyards and places to eat. A better way to do the Gold Coast is to base yourself in the hills and drive down to the action before retreating pack to quiet, cool beauty of the uplands.

A short drive inland from Oxenford is Tamborine Mountain, which has three charming little communities that straddle the McPherson Range. This district has become a wedding planner’s dream location with plenty of places to feast and accommodate a bridal party, with sensational photo opportunities looking back down to the high rises and seascape of the Gold Coast.

At night, all true romantics at heart will need to pause and gaze at the distant lights of the Coast, which seems to float like a shimmering fairyland against the dark backdrop of the sea. There is plenty to do by day, including hike through the rainforest to splashing waterfalls, and indulge in some retail therapy on creative arts and antiques along the Gallery Walk.

Pick out a few Gold Coast hinterland accommodation bases in the various valleys of the highlands and see the local sights. And if you can bear to leave the peaceful beauty of the hills, the raucous delights of the Gold Coast are not far away.
