Make what you want of Esperance and the Southwest from your luxury accommodation

The rewards of venturing this far are many: soaring forests where you can walk through the treetops, whale watching, fantastic surfing breaks, farm-gates and squeaky clean beaches of white sand to lie back on.

You’re travelling far from the Big Smoke and this landscape will not disappoint. Just check-in to your well-positioned accommodation and allow enough time to make the most of it.

Balingup, at the northern entrance to the Blackwood River Valley, is a delightfully secluded little township. The famous Bibbulmun Track passes through town, offering the chance to walk part of a route that spans 400 kilometres from Perth to Albany. In town, there are galleries and shops with trinkets and bibelots fashioned by local craftspeople.

Some of Australia’s finest and wildest national parks are scattered across the southwest, all easily accessible with the right choice of accommodation. They offer many different travel experiences ranging from rough 4WD adventures to walkways and signposted trails. One of our favourites is the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, which is on the way to Denmark. Denmark is noted for its rugged coastline and towering karri forests.

You can make Albany whatever type of holiday you need: swim and sunbake at Middleton Beach and Ellen Cove, walk in Torndirrup National Park (look for Natural Bridge, a rock formation carved by the ferocious seas) or play golf at the Albany Golf Course.

Esperance is surrounded by national parks and reserves and offers some of the best travel experiences in the southwest. The sand is squeaky white, the waters turquoise and the wildlife abundant, and the luxury accommodation plentiful. Out to sea there are about 100 islands and the locals have fought hard to preserve the area’s unspoilt beauty. There are no traffic lights here and the pace is languid and relaxed.

Don’t miss Cape Le Grand National Park, where kangaroos laze on the beach and the scenery is spectacular. The Great Ocean Drive provides a panoramic view of the islands (you can take a cruise and discover them first hand). From June to October, you can often spot Southern Right whales sheltering in the many bays and coves.

It takes an effort to reach this intriguing area of Western Australia, but the rewards offered by the Southwest to Esperance region are well worth it. There is also fantastic Southwest and Esperance accommodation that will make your trek more rewarding so check out our handpicked collection before you check-in.
