Watch the city lights glisten from the Dandenong Ranges or relax in the Yarra Valley

David Attenborough understood the charms of the Dandenongs only too well when he visited a few years ago to film a documentary on the native lyrebird, with its magnificent plumage and mesmerising ability to mimic sounds.

The native flora and fauna is certainly worth the trip and this, along with the region’s cooler climate and gentle pace of life, has been wooing city dwellers for over a hundred years. Although close enough to Melbourne for a Sunday drive, the area’s many attractions merit a restorative weekend or longer stay. There’s no shortage of accommodation in the Dandenong Ranges and nearby in the Yarra Valley, from old-world guesthouses and friendly B&Bs to stunning romantic luxury retreats.

The road from Ferntree Gully winds its way through quaint historic villages such as Sassafras and Olinda – home to cosy tearooms, interesting shops and gourmet delis packed with local produce. Stop here and pick up picnic fare to enjoy in the lush glades around One Tree Hill, Fern Gully and Sherbrooke Forest, which you will share with those famous lyrebirds, as well as flocks of cockatoos, parrots and galahs.

The pride and joy of the region, the historic Puffing Billy narrow-gauge railway, departs from Belgrave or Gembrook several times a day, chugging through the bush and over trestle bridges, its open carriages packed with sightseers.

Nestled in the shadows of the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley is one of Victoria’s most prized wine regions. Although vines were first planted here in 1837 at Yering Station, the local wine industry all but died between the 1890s until mid-century and it is only since the 1960s that its now renowned cool-climate grapes have flourished.

Some 40 wineries in the area welcome visitors for cellar door tastings and sales – including the distinguished vineyards of Domain Chandon and De Bortoli – with the biggest concentration lying around Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek. Many of the estates make a glorious setting for sampling the local produce or dabbling in fine dining, and are easily accessible from the range of luxury accommodation options throughout the Yarra Valley.

At the heart of the region, Healesville is a hub for tourists, many of whom pay a visit to the koalas, kangaroos, platypuses and other native fauna at the renowned Healesville Sanctuary. Habitat exhibits and an insight into the on-site veterinary wildlife hospital make this a fun and educational highlight for holidaying kids.
