The location at Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages has been carved from a natural cathedral of soaring trees set on a carpet of emerald grass. Spaced through this majestic grove are the cottages, each offering its own unique theme. You can savour the romantic flavour of the 'Bali' or 'Tuscany', or the fun of the Aussie 'Pioneer' with its hint of an early settler's shack, or the breezy 'Nautical'. Each is superbly appointed for longer stays and your hosts, Jenny and John Wright (who live nearby) are always available to attend to your needs or offer advice on what to see and do.
But it is the clear, cool volcanic crater lakes that will really stun you. Lake Eacham is a spectacular example – a broad, low-relief crater of about 50ha fed by springs and rain and bounded by rainforest and grassed areas. Its pristine waters are marvellous for swimming and canoeing.
The surrounding World Heritage-listed area is rich in wildlife including rifle birds (watch  their amazing courting rituals) and pademelon wallabies, which feed by the forest edge in the evenings. This is a true sanctuary, a place to sit in hushed awe and breathe deeply.
Location: 65km or one hour southwest of Cairns. RA 14 G4.
Facilities: Four themed cottages each with king bed, lounge (log fire, TV, DVD library, double sofa bed), full kitchen, spa bathroom, deck with BBQ, RC AC. Guest laundry. Full breakfast provided first night.
