Cairns accommodation: exploring tropical Queensland at its best

The Cairns waterfront buzzes with Great Barrier Reef tour operators, shopping strips and restaurants full of fresh seafood. Backpackers mix with honeymooners, international nomads and Aussies in search of balmy warmth.

The electric atmosphere is offset by tropical architectural gems such as the 1936 Cairns Regional Gallery, which features local artists’ work and wonderful exhibitions. A great option for choosing your Cairns accommodation is to base yourself in one of the quiet, palm-fringed beach villages out of town and slip into the city for some occasional retail therapy.

Nearby Holloways Beach has a classic North Queensland coastal vibe of swaying coconut palms and limpid waters lapping soft, warm sand. Forget cooking, grab yourself some grilled red emperor, hot chips and some icy, cold beers, and enjoy a sunset dinner on the grassy esplanade overlooking the Coral Sea. Local markets add colour and shopping opportunities.

Inland from Cairns are the Cairns Highlands (also called the Atherton Tableland). The spectacular 7.5km Skyrail cable car to Kuranda soars over the rainforest canopy. At up to 1200 metres above sea level, the Tableland has a distinctive microclimate, flora and fauna, including the strange curtain tree fig, a strangler species that finds and overwhelms a host tree. Atherton was the first town settled on the Tableland and retains some stunning Queenslander architecture. It also provides easy access to many walks, swimming holes and parks.
