Heart of Country and ACT Map

Heart of Country and ACT luxury, Boutique & Romantic Accommodation

The Great Dividing Range splits New South Wales into two very distinctive climatic and cultural zones. On the eastern side is the coast, often with a sub-tropical climate. To the west lie the vast spreading plains of the inland that run up to the edge of Australia’s interior deserts. The landscape and lifestyle of country NSW is very different from its urbanised cityscapes. Here in the wheat belt of NSW there is farmstay accommodation, grand old pubs and spectacular natural scenery.

As you follow the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains, you eventually reach the steep descent to Lithgow and the western foothills of the mountains. Make a detour to Hassans Walls for phenomenal views of the mountain range and the Hartley Valley. Kids will love riding the steam train along the Zig Zag Railway.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Bathurst in 1815 as the first administrative centre of inland New South Wales. It retains many impressive buildings, including the ominous sandstone walls of the Bathurst Gaol and the copper-domed Bathurst Court House.

If you are heading further west, slip off the Great Western Highway to Peel Road and the Castlereagh Highway to Mudgee. It has developed a thriving wine industry over the past 40 years and is noted for its rich cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and chardonnay. Wineries such as Moothi Estate are part of the monthly Mudgee Progressive Lunch.

Wagga Wagga has superb Botanic Gardens and the kids will be thankful if you detour slightly north to Junee for the Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory. Albury is the centre of a vibrant net of small communities on the Murray River and Lake Hulme. There are plenty of water activities such as riding paddle steamers, skiing and fishing.

Canberra is a must-see for anyone interested in Australia’s intricately planned capital. American architect Walter Burley Griffin beat 136 other applicants in 1911 with his design for the city. His original plans are in the National Archives of Australia.

If Parliament is sitting, make sure you stop by Parliament House at about 2pm to see the bear pit of Question Time. There are plenty of fascinating things to do, including checking out 400 portraits of prominent Australians at the National Portrait Gallery.

Historic Bungendore, on the outskirts of the ACT, is a relaxed old country village. It has craft shops and wineries to visit, including one of Australia’s highest vineyards, Lark Hill Winery.

All of this and more can be explored with your luxury Country NSW or ACT accommodation awaiting you at the end of each day. Browse through Beautiful Accommodation's handpicked collection to plan your dream getaway, or find more options further afield with our NSW accommodation.
